Fastest Broadband for Cornwall

Kevin Lavery, head of Cornwall Council, has a good reason to be happy. The region’s council has cleared a project that will bring super fast broadband to Cornwall’s top businesses. Enhanced fibre optic cables are proposed to be used to create the networks. If such a project is indeed completed, Cornwall will enjoy the fastest broadband speeds in the UK, with an unbelievable speed of 1Gb.

The proposed project will be funded by a grant that has been formed with the objective of boosting local economy and enhancing the skills of the work force. It is expected that work on the £100 million broadband project will commence by 2010.

Mr Lavery confirmed that at present, the procurement formalities are still being thrashed out. Once a final bidder is identified, a public announcement will be made. Following this, the actual work of setting up the service across the county can begin.

Due assistance for implementation of the project is to be provided by the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) and southwestbusiness.co.uk. The speeds of connectivity that the project will generate when completed will put Cornwall prominently on the world business map and give an enormous boost to the county’s economy.
