Horticulture must rank as one of the topmost summer interests, particularly in the UK. Along with horticulture, comes a big collection of garden tools and equipment, especially for those with a huge interest in Gardening. Then, for many, the summer and fall seasons woefully come to an end, and it is time to get the shed configured and everything put aside for the wintertime. Don’t we all just detest that job!
Garden tools just have to be one of the most problematic collections of household items to manage. Smaller hand tools such as the secateur are quite easy to hide away in the shed. Their problem is their size, making them prone to be mislaid and be missing by spring. The biggest issue comes with storing the problematic sized larger accessories.
Can you envisage anything more challenging than a springbok rake for finding somewhere sensible to put permanently? Add in the border fork with its lethal forked spikes, the pic hoe, garden rake, push and pull hoe, garden spade and you have a recipe for cataclysm lying in wait for you. If you have youngsters, then the perils are even larger.
With all of these divisors in mind its is best to have have your accessories housecleaned and then put away, in doing this it will make it simple for you to encounter them in the new year That is why garden equipment racks, especially designed for the function of stacking away garden tools, are such an essential feature of any garden storage, or garage if that is where you have to store your gardening things.
In order to make your garden accessories easy to find and to keep them in good order you will need a good tool stand. The problem is, which stand do you prefer? There are many options, and some of these are very well fashioned for the function intended. While freestanding stands, if balanced and strengthened, might be acceptable, it is surely healthier to have a wall rack that is permanently fixed to the garden shed or garage wall. That way, it is less likely to come crashing down in a heap on the ground. If you have minors, a wall rack that can be elevated out of the stretch of the tiddlers is important, as is opting one that will grasp the shovel and other serious horticulture accessories securely in place.
Welcome to the following version of “are you safe?”here are some causes you may consider updating your company health and safety text files. How long has it been since you last looked at your organisations of safety management? You should make this a regular task . New applied science plays a important roll now as continuous development of machines and systems are replacing humanity from mundane jobs. Key personnel and people with duty are stated in the policy so if these change the policy also needs to be altered to reflect this.
Possibly on that point has been a change in statute law that would affect your company if this is the example you should update and consolidate this into and statute health and safety policy you may have. You may accomplished a monitoring exercise or perchance an probe that may spotlight an issue with faults in your policy, this would hopefully incite you to review and update. You will definitely have to do this if you get a enforcement card against your company or business because if not you could be prosecuted or even have your company or occupation closed down.Just to repeat I would alike to advise that there is no firm time limit to be updating your health and safety policy simply guidelines but please think the old saying better sound than sorry. I would advise considering of your safety documentation as a working advancement that demands continuous elevating and fine-tuning.
Don’t forget that making an up to date policy with records of grounds and dates of inspection will appear very effective to likely clients demonstrating you are a well managed company.
The outlook for 2009 and 2010 is a bit somber if you’re a home owner - dropping house prices are causing a great concern for many people. Some home owners will find themselves in negative equity later this year or next year, if not already. Even so, there are methods to avoid this issue. The Answer : to add value to your home. How to go about that? By making home improvements. Do It Yourself / home improvements can contribute far greater value to your property than the actual cost of those improvements.
So where to start? A good place to start is to consider the rooms in your house that you use the least. It could be a utility room or an adjoining garage. Taking down a wall can transform such a rarely used area into extra space for a living room or kitchen. Also look at the electrics and plumbing. Dimmer switches can transform ugly bright rooms into cosy, warm rooms just via a dimmer dial - simply light transforming the room! Possibly your property doesn’t have a downstairs bathroom? Then get one put in where your adjoining garage is - again this can add much value to your property.
Maybe your 4 bedroomed house could be reformed to 3 bedroom by taking a wall down, and creating a much larger room. This may sound a little odd, but actually larger rooms will give you a better sale value, and quite often individuals use a 4th bedroom purely as a spare room (meaning it’s not really used or important) .
Next up is the garden. Do you have a shed? If this answer is no, consider installing one in your garden. Why is this of particular importance? Well, here is one place where you can stock all your gear that’s clogging up your spare bedroom / garage / utility room. Sheds encourage gardening also, and enthusiastic gardeners (read: your future home buyer) like a shed in their garden. Also do some gardening yourself! If your garden’s been forgotten about, then cut the grass, plant some flowers, cut the lawn edges. Install some decking if you have some room. Just providing a beverage to a potential buyer out in your lovely garden can really make the place sell itself - they feel comfortable in such an environment - so your garden is very important to help raise the price of your property and help sell your home.
Where can you get advice? Look online. A home and garden directory like homeandgardenlistings.co.uk has all kinds of home and garden websites listed there : including a directory of bathroom fitters, directory of builders, directory of painters and decorators, directory of garden furniture suppliers, directory of bedroom furniture and beds suppliers etc.
These are just some fundamental points on raising the value of your house in these difficult times, but we hope this will spur you into some action!

Orchids are beautiful flowers. The interesting thing about orchids is that they seem to draw people to them. There is hardly another plant or flower that has been able to capture the attention and desire of people the way orchids have. In the past orchids have been hunted and collected in almost every part of the world. Today there are millions of people who are absolutely devoted to the plant and its beautiful “faces.”
It’s estimated that there are nearly 20 thousand varieties of orchids. They grow in many different climates and regions. There are some important factors to consider when growing your orchids. Light is probably the single most important factor in determining whether or not your plants will bloom. The appropriate amount of light is necessary for proper plant growth and nutrient storage. Without the right light levels, your plant either cannot produce enough food stores to power a blooming cycle. Too much light may burn the orchid and too little light will not support its needs.
An interesting feature of growing orchids is that a plant can live for a long time even with light that is less than ideal, but you probably won’t have any flowers. On the other side thought a large and healthy plant that has grown for a long time without enough light will often put on an impressive display once given proper lighting. This means that orchids are very durable and resilient.
As you seek to grow the perfect orchid, take your time and look around as you decide where in your garden you’d like to grow orchids. It will be well worth the patient time and effort you put in to see splendid, beautiful orchids in full bloom.
When you design your homes décor, say something about your style, elegance, and class, by using decorative coasters. Coasters can be more then furniture barriers, they can speak about your attention to detail and the care you put into your home.
Having coasters shows that you take pride in your furnishings, and that you care about the details. The marks left behind by a glass are almost unnoticeable, but if the piece they appear on is worth further scrutiny, they will be apparent. That coaster is a way of showing that your table is worth that extra attention paid to it.
Coasters come in such a wide variety that it should be easy to find one to fit your décor. They can be made of almost any material, in almost any shape. Classic coasters are made with quality, from high end materials such as wood or stone. Less expensive coasters can be made from paper or plastic, although the wrong coaster can actually have a negative effect on your décor.
You want to try and avoid any coaster that is too flashy. Coasters will have an effect on a room, but you want that effect to be subdued. The coaster should not be the center of attention, it should merely add to the effect of a room. Matching colors and materials is often the best way to go when deciding on a coaster set to buy.

Would you like to save some money on electricity? Your first step would be to have a serious look at solar-powered lights. This is especially true when it comes to installing landscape lighting around your yard and home. Landscape lighting is available in hundreds of differently-designed fixtures and is extremely effective when solar applications are used. Technology has evolved over the years and so has solar lighting. Solar outdoor lighting fixtures use LED (light emitting diode) lamps and are a much more powerful light than the solar cell, which was its predecessor.
Although solar lights are not as powerful as electrically-powered fixtures, they are well suited for decorative lighting in and around your yard. These outdoor lighting fixtures feed directly off the energy of the sun and collect what they need from the sun’s rays during the day through solar cell panels. When night falls, your solar landscape lighting fixtures illuminate by releasing the solar energy and thus illuminating your yard. The panels use NiMH rechargeable batteries or NiCad technology to store the power collected from the sun.
Outdoor lighting fixtures are remarkably easy to install, compared to the more traditional landscape lighting. When it comes to regular landscape lighting, you will need a professional electrician to do all the work. Solar lighting is fast to install and there is no underground wiring required, either. All you do is put the posts in the ground. Make sure that your solar landscape lighting fixture is placed in an area that receives lots of natural sunlight so it can be adequately charged for the task at hand. You will find that the amount of light given off is directly proportional to the amount of sun absorbed during the day. From each fixture you can expect nine to 10 hours of light per night. You can purchase solar landscape lighting to illuminate pathways, decks and pool areas. Have fun saving money today with your solar landscape lighting alternative!
Is there too much digging and not enough harvesting going on in your garden? Try these ideas to make your garden work harder for you without breaking a sweat!
Rotation:
When one crop comes out of the ground, quickly turn the earth and plant something else straight away. This could be late summer lettuce or over-wintering salad varieties. Some beans can be successfully planted in the autumn, in particular broad beans, along with late cropping cauliflowers and other brassicas.
Make small cloches to protect the young plants from autumn weather. Cut a clear plastic bottle in half to produce two min-cloches!
What you plant as a second crop will depend heavily on your region, climate and availability of seed. However, when this crop comes out in the Spring, there will be far less weeds than if you had left the patch fallow all winter.
Don’t do this every year as the earth will need feeding and resting, but even a small garden can be divided into rotatable patches, and if you get double your crops from one space, you won’t need the extra space every year. Pile on as much green manure as you can and keep your fallow patch weed free.
Companions:
Plant your crops close together so those pesky weeds don’t get a chance to grow. Companion planting enables you, not only to save space in the garden and control the weeds, it will also help with pest control. A line of onions next to a line of carrots confuses the onion fly and the carrot fly!
Plant your good companion plants close together but avoid putting large crops of the same species too close. Plant a tomato plant here and there round the garden, then if one plant gets a disease, it doesn’t easily spread to the other plants. The same with cabbages. The cabbage white butterfly, dreaded enemy of brassica growers everywhere, won’t be so attracted to your garden if the cabbages aren’t neatly planted in rows.
Raised Beds:
Not only good for controlling the weeds and saving space for those extra crops, but also great for controlling aching backs! The raised bed system in principal means you don’t walk on your beds, and therefore they should be no wider than a couple of metres, preferably less. You need to be able to reach everywhere on the bed without stepping onto the soil at all.
Once dug, fill with your plants and hoe regularly. When your first crop is harvested fork over the soil lightly. It shouldn’t need any heavy digging again for some years.
Permanent Patches:
Keep permanent patches in your garden. A small herb patch or corner in your vegetable garden will attract bees and also give you and your family lots of new tastes, natural medicines and even cosmetic preparations.
Herbs will establish themselves fairly quickly and will thrive with regular picking. You honestly won’t know what to do with all those wonderful fresh herbs, that would otherwise cost you a fortune in the supermarket.
Another great permanent patch to create is asparagus. Most new gardeners are put off growing this wonderful vegetable because of all sorts of crazy reasons. I’ve even heard it said that it’s a “luxury crop” - whatever that may mean! Asparagus is extremely good for you, is ready to pick during the ‘hungry gap’ in the vegetable garden, and best of all, with very little attention, it will produce more and more every year. Create a permanent asparagus bed and indulge in the luxury!

Will the climates help growing orchids? Is it easy or hard to grow them? I thought that growing orchids was difficult?
All these are great questions and have a great deal to do with greenhouses. You will see a growing number of folks using greenhouses to grow orchids and a slew of other plants.
To answer the question simply, Yes you can use greenhouses for orchids but there are a few stipulations. They will usually do very well and may even bloom more frequently for you.
To answer some of the questions raised earlier. An orchid green house can be a very good place to grow you favorite plants including orchids. Depending on the style of your greenhouse both the light and temperature can be maintained.
Some orchids will grow very well in hot, tropical climates, like Vandas. Others like the see a temperature decrease in the night time like the phalaenopsis orchids.
Your greenhouse will be a special place for you to come to enjoy your hobby. It will be your “sanctuary”.
Before you purchase a greenhouse be sure you fully understand what will be necessary to help control both the temperature and the light. For example, growing orchids like phalaenopsis orchids like bright light but not necessarily direct sunlight. They do like a West setting and late day sun. The Cattleya orchids do well in sunlight.
Greenhouses vary both in size, shape and cost. Some use wood as the frame, others use aluminum. It seems that aluminum stands up better to the whims of nature than does wood. It also looks better for a longer period of time.
If you live in the Northern part of the US you definitely will need a heat source for your growing plants. This could be gas fired small furnaces or electric heat. Remember, when you turn the heat on humidity goes down.
Good ventilation and humidity are very important. Most plants including growing orchids depend on air circulation. A fan can do this very easily. Be sure to keep the fan clean to avoid cross pollination of disease from one plant to another.
Growing orchids in greenhouses will allow you to grow plants year round. You plant what you want, when you want to, and how you want. You can control the light, temperature, watering and humidity so you will have a healthy, viable greenhouse for your hobby.

Are you like me? Sad to see the summer end but at the same time relieved that there is one less task to tend to. Weeding, watering, pruning, and more weeding is over for this year and with a few more chores the outdoor gardening year draws to a close. Most of what needs to be completed is a matter of cleaning up and covering up. Practical steps to preparing your outdoor garden for winter involve:
1. Protecting plants. There are different opinions concerning whether to cut down or leave plants standing through the winter. Here on the prairies most people leave their perennials standing for a variety of reasons. In particular, trapping the snow cover is important for protection of plants and retaining moisture. Snow cover acts the same as good mulch by insulating the soil. Many perennial stems and seed heads are also very attractive for winter interest and provide food for the birds. After the ground freezes, mulch perennials and shrub beds with pine needles, compost, peat moss, or chopped leaves. This protects the soil and plant roots and moderates the effects of extreme temperature changes during winter periods of freezes and thaws.
2. Cleaning-up the garden. Harvest warm-season crops such as tomatoes even though they are still green. Lie out on windowsills; or layer in boxes with newspapers between the layers of tomatoes. They will slowly ripen or you can use green tomatoes for fried green tomatoes or various green tomato recipes. Pull out any remaining crops or spent annuals; clean up remaining debris and weeds to decrease the possibility of disease problems in the spring.
3. Evaluating your garden design. Before you start winterizing your garden, take a few minutes to review what worked and what didn’t and make note of any areas that you would like to change in the spring.
4. Prepare the soil for early spring seeding. Turn over the garden soil late in the season while amending with organic matter such as leaves, compost, or well-rotted manure. In the spring, a light raking is all that is needed.
5. Caring for trees and lawns. Protect the tender bark of young trees from rabbits and gnawing critters by wrapping stems or trunks with chicken wire or commercial tree-guard products. To prevent rodents from nesting near buildings and trees, trim tall grass, and remove weeds. Deeply water trees and shrubs so that they go into winter well hydrated. Don’t prune shrubs and trees as it may stimulate new growth just before the harsh weather. Cut lawns and fertilise if you wish with a low nitrogen ‘winter’ blend. Use grass clippings for mulch or compost. Never send them to the landfill, as they are excellent fertiliser left on the lawn (if they are not too long) and/or make terrific compost/mulch dug straight into the garden or used for pathways. Once rotted on garden pathways, dig into the garden and replace with new grass clippings.
6. Planting before winter. Now is the time to plant bulbs. Garden centres carry many varieties suitable for the prairies. Remember: buy good quality as cheap is not better - the larger the bulb - the larger the bloom. Look for plumpness, firmness, clean skin, and surface. Directions for planting are included with the package.
7. Composting. Compost dead plant debris including leaves. Leaves are a valuable natural resource. Rather than a nuisance, they are the best soil amendment as well as terrific mulches. Leaves take very little effort to recycle into a wonderful soil conditioner - leaf mould - for the yard and garden. You can make leaf mould by the same process nature does. Pile up moist leaves and wait for them to decompose or shred the leaves into smaller pieces before piling them up. If you wish, you can enclose the pile with chicken wire, snow fencing, or something similar. In the spring, I rake up dry leaves and dig them straight into the vegetable garden.
8. Cleaning your tools. Clean the soil from all your gardening tools, oil any wooden handles and moving parts, sharpen any blades, and then store them in a dry place for the winter.
9. Water Gardening. Bring in pumps, drain, clean, refill (if necessary) and store tender water plants prior to freezing.
10. Bringing in your indoor plants. Before bringing in any houseplants that have spent the summer outdoors, examine them for critters, wash them, and spray with soapy water or insecticidal soap. Use sterilised potting soil purchased from garden centres or shopping malls if re-potting your plants. Don’t use garden soil as it may harbour insects, weed seeds, disease, and fungi.
