NYC Locals: Cable Competition in New York

Filed under: Blogging It, Consumer Life, Great Entertainment — admin @ 3:41 am

Watching On the internet movies and other content over a tv screen usually suggests purchasing a special device for example an Apple Television or plugging plenty of wires to the correct holes around the PCs and TVs.

Tv service provider FiOS is testing a service that would get rid of that headache. It would allow you enjoy movies, check out photos or examine your e-mail as a result of your Tv. The television is basically a mirror show from the computer monitor.

You begin by accessing and setting up the software in your laptop or computer. Although FiOS will likely not provide particulars on it, the software performs much like remote-access computer programs that allow troubleshooters analyze your Computer from elsewhere. Then, anything you activate on your laptop or computer will look in your Tv.

It will get sent from your laptop or computer back over FiOS lines to its network, which then sends the image back to your Tv display like a channel that only you are able to enjoy. Verizon FiOS, which serves thousands of houses within the Manhattan location, isn’t saying a lot about when its buyers will get this service, or whether there are going to be an extra cost.

It’s announcing a limited trial for now, to start by June. And it’ll only be accessible to buyers who’ve both World wide web and digital services through Verizon fios. You won’t be in a position to control your Computer with your Tv remote, even though, meaning you’d have to get up to switch video or pause it.

Creating a Successful Electronic Newsletter!

Filed under: Great Entertainment — admin @ 3:27 pm

You are probably thinking you really don’t need to start a newsletter. After all, the Internet is swamped with people offering them. There are thousands perhaps millions of newsletters out there.

Why should you offer an electronic newsletter at your web site?

It is the easiest way to get free advertising and promotional information to a “targeted” base of consumers. Whenever we send out our newsletter, we always receive numerous hits and repeat traffic within 30 minutes of the newsletter being sent out. If you sell tangible products, you can expect 5 - 10 product orders within that same time frame, if you have a promotional offer that creates urgency.

No other advertising method allows you to reach such a wide base of people throughout the world, so affordably and so quickly. If you don’t have a web site yet, prepare to start a newsletter when you put your web site up. If you have a web site already and you don’t have a newsletter, START ONE TODAY!

How are you going to get someone to subscribe to your newsletter and what do you put in it? Here are a few pointers about successful newsletters.

1. Newsletters should be content driven. We believe a good newsletter should excite, educate and entertain. Some of our peers might disagree, they say that a newsletter should only promote. We think promotion is an essential part of a newsletter but should not be the sole component. You can write about things relevant to your business or you can feature articles from professionals in your field. You can also do a combination of both.

2. A newsletter should be Opt-In or (permission based). Don’t get over excited about launching your web site by sending out a bunch of e-mail’s promoting your site and newsletter to news groups or user lists. This is not only bad Internet manners but it is bad business.

3. Locate the “subscribe button” to your newsletter in a prominent part of your home page, that is virtually impossible to miss. If you need an example of this, go to our home page at http://www.emarketingman.com

4. In your subscription confirmation e-mail, tell the new subscriber how they can unsubscribe and how frequently you will be e-mailing them. Don’t get offended if someone unsubscribes. It isn’t personal, drop them from your list and move on.

5. Automate your subscribe and unsubscribe process. There are a number of organizations that will host your newsletter for free. These companies have systems that allow you to quickly and easily set up your own automated newsletter subscriber system. Two companies we recommend are http://www.topica.com and http://www.egroups.com. Setting up with either company takes about twenty minutes. Automating your subscriber process will make your site more professional and will also save you time from having to manually add and remove subscribers.

6. Make money by selling advertising or promoting products that you have affiliate links with in your newsletter. Now you are not only sending out free advertising at no cost to you, you are making money selling space in your newsletter or promoting products in your newsletter.

A great example of a successful newsletter is “What’s The Word? How to separate Internet Fact from Fiction!” This is our EMarketingMan.com newsletter. You can read past newsletters at http://www.topica.com/lists/emarketingman/read

In summary, a newsletter is the easiest way to promote your products or your web site. The time involved in writing a newsletter is worth the return, since sending the newsletter out if free! If you don’t have a electronic newsletter, you are missing out on the most cost effective strategy available for promoting your web site.

What More Could You Ask, BIG DISCOUNT, MORE SAVINGS and MORE CHANNELS - ONLY FiOS TV Could Do that

Filed under: Blogging It, Consumer Life, Great Entertainment — admin @ 11:07 pm

At last, my location got access to the latest in broadcast alternatives, and we recently connected to Verizon’s latest Fiber-optic FIOS TV. The waiting list in my state is especially long, so while I signed up last month, it wasn’t installed until last week. At the present time, we were hooked up with FIOS internet, which provided 15MB downstream as well as upstream (an exclusive service costing an extra $10 monthly) and have found myself very satisfied with it.

Because I currently has Verizon FIOS internet service, connecting my TV was a simple installation.

The interface is very easy to use and very intuitive. There are also plenty of advanced features and shortcuts you’ll find as you become more familiar with the software. When you’re watching TV, selecting the buttons marked up, down, left or right will take you those directions. (this can be done as a shortcut) to a variety of functions, instantaneously. For example, pressing the up button takes you to the TV Guide split screen mode with the TV picture shown on the left, and pressing the down button takes you to the half-screen floating TV guide. If you press “Guide” a single time, it delivers the full-screen menu, while hitting it two times takes you to a split-screen. Pressing the button marked “Info” once will give you a small pop up with information about the TV show you’re watching and hitting it again will give you full-screen information.

The DVR can store approximately 17 hours of HD TV or 60 hours of standard TV. (short for Standard Definition) or whatever mix of the two you can take care of. Like with the majority of DVR devices, it is possible to adjust every recording as “protected”. It is not deleted automatically. or to stay in a life with the latest x recordings. It’s possible to choose new episodes exclusively, or to choose all shows including those that are repeats.

The price for core package is 43$ a month. For this you get several DVR options ranging from standard HD, standard DVR and HD DVR. Cable was costing us close to $60 and we don’t watch enough TV to justify spending that much. Premium channels cost the same as with cable, most likely since HBO and Showtime set their own costs, rather than the provider.

All things considered, we’ve been totally delighted! The quality of the picture is outstanding, the set-top box works well, and I believe that Verizon Fios will keep updating the boxes with the newest software features and even more On-Demand Movies. It is my opinion that the first month of Verizon FIOS TV in my state has set the stage right for its great progress. I feel that local cable does not compete with this service.

Nebra Star Disc Is Europes Oldest Astronomical Picture

Filed under: Great Entertainment — admin @ 4:27 pm

The Nebra Star disc, bronze, thirty centimeters in length and covered with golden decorations that form a picture of the sun, the moon and stars, is rewriting the epic story of how civilization came to Europe, over 3000 year ago. Archaeologists believe that the Nebra Star disc dates all the way back to 1600 BC, making it the oldest accurate picture of the night sky in all history. It is thought that many tribes used this to study astrology too

The images on the star disc have sacred meaning. The Sun is a bringer of life, while the Moon symbolizes the passage of time. The small cluster of seven stars between the sun and the moon on the star disc resembled the constellation known the Pleiades. The horizon band marks the Sun’s sacred solstices in Central Europe. All these symbols represent the complexity of European belief systems.

Archaeologists have revived the debate over whether a spectacular Bronze Age disc from Germany is one of the earliest known calendars.

The Nebra disc is emblazoned with symbols of the Sun, Moon and stars and said by some to be 3,600 years old.

Writing in the journal Antiquity, a team casts doubt on the idea the disc was used by ancient astronomers as a precision tool for observing the sky.

They instead argue that the disc was used for shamanistic rituals.

Little Known Facts

Filed under: Great Entertainment — admin @ 7:34 pm

Little known facts can be just interesting. Here are some of those: A typical lightning bolt is two to four inches wide and two miles long; A month that starts with a Sunday will have a Friday the 13th in it; Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after March 21; Close to 50% of all bank robberies take place on Friday.

Do you know the furthest point on Earth from the center? It’s the peak of Mount Chimborazo, in Ecuador, near the Equator. The Earth bulges at the equator, making Mount Chimborazo even further out there than Everest.

Then there are the little known facts that are funny. These include, for example, silly laws that are still on the books. Here are some of those: By law, people in Vermont must take at least one bath a week; In Oklahoma, dogs need a permit signed by the mayor in order to congregate on private property in groups of three or more; In Roanoke, VA, it’s against the law to advertise on tombstones; It’s illegal to put coins in your ears in Hawaii.

“Odor Judger” is an actual job title, and job description. So do you want to smell armpits all day to help make effective deodorants? I’m not sure why somebody other than some strange fetishist would want this job.

Useful Little Known Facts

Little known does not mean not useful. There are many things most people don’t know that can be extremely useful. A few of these follow.

When an item can’t be removed from your credit report, you have the right to add a 100-word explanation to it, permanently. All who receive the report will see your explanation. If, for example, you had an argument with a doctor over a charge, you can explain the details.

You can get free x-rays. Some dental schools will x-ray your mouth for free, if you have the patience to sit there while the instructor coaches the student through the process. You then get your x-rays to take to the dentist.

Thre are still towns with nice houses you can buy for less than $30,000. As of January, 2006, these include Altoona, Pennsylvania, Anaconda Montana, Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Independence, Kansas. More are listed on the web site: Houses Under Fifty Thousand .com.

Buy two separate plane tickets to save hundreds. It cost $1750 to fly round trip from Traverse City, Michigan to Quito, Ecuador. That was the cheapest fare we found on any website. However, it was only $299 round-trip to Miami, and $405 round-trip from Miami to Quito. $704 total! Save over $1000 by buying two separate tickets.

You can’t fold a dollar bill in half eight times, doubling it each time. In fact, try it even with a large piece of paper. It can’t be done. You can win a bar bet with this fact, so I’ll classify this one among the interesting, funny AND useful little known facts.
