Will Digital Content Revive Micropayments?

Filed under: Net Commerce — admin @ 7:55 pm

This is a revival of the micropayments concept first introduced in 1994 by a Dutch firm called Digicash, which developed a solution to the problem of making small payments online. It boasted the geeky merit of being provable mathematically - by a powerful equation embodied in a simple software product.

Digicash’s system was extraordinarily elegant. It featured persuasive benefits, such as anonymity for users, bullet-proof security for merchants and no limits on transaction values, i.e., it could be used to make payments of only a few pence or even a multi-million pound transaction.

To make this possible, Digicash relied on its own newly minted digital currency: Cyberbucks. Plenty were impressed by Digicash’s apparent potential to short-circuit the global financial system by replacing big, centrally-issued currencies with untraceable private ones.

Sadly, they were the only people who got excited about Digicash. Cyberbucks never caught on, and the company ultimately went bust, despite having a core business in smart cards for governments and banks.

The problem was that merchants hated the anonymity part, governments hated the alternative currency part, banks hated the competition and Internet users could not be persuaded they even needed micropayments at all.

Meanwhile, giants such as Visa and MasterCard began to pay attention and launched their own products and services for the Web. The rest is history.

But there is a new interest in micropayments that aims to tap the potential for very small online transactions by finally making them economical for merchants. The main problem with such transactions is that fees imposed by banks and credit card companies eat into the whole profit if the transaction is too small.

To get around this, new schemes simply need to batch microtransactions and complete a credit card transaction on a set amount, say, US$20. As a merchant, payment from a micropayment service might actually be received for only 1 in 100 completed transactions. The micropayment service will choose when to pay a merchant and how much to pay. If 100 customers have each spent 10 pence at your website, it will discard 99 of those transactions, but then pay out a larger sum in one go.

Therefore, the money paid by those customers will always arrive, even if, day to day, you may find yourself down (or even up) on the sum owed. Companies like Yaga and FirstGate explored these types of features in their content payment solutions, but have a different approach to the setup. FirstGate offers an ASP model where the content provider connects to FirstGate services and do not worry about managing the payment service. Yaga, on the other hand, integrates its technology in a content provider’s system and can run the service for the content provider, if required.

Unfortunately, like those preceding it, Yaga and Firstgate have utterly ignored the fact that in terms of demand, no one is really listening.

Major Pitfall to Avoid While Using Google Adsense

Filed under: Net Commerce — admin @ 8:56 pm

Anyone using Google Ads is aware of the great potential of income by way of visitors visiting your website or blog and clicking on one of the Google Ad Links and registering a payment in your Google Adsense account, sounds simple.

The major hurdle for people is getting that website traffic to your site, and reading the various information guides on the internet will provide you with practically thousands of useful ways of generating traffic such as keyword rich web pages, article writing and reciprocal linking to name but a few.

But people must also realise there are actual ways on the internet that are expressed in articles as being the golden ticket to riches, which are in fact the sure fire and quickest way to get yourself banned by Google, ruining any potential of you making a decent income from your website, and people must be aware of the problem outcome.

From my own experience when first starting out with Google Adsense, I found myself to be very impatient at the fact that I may have to work at my website for possibly years to generate enough traffic to click on my ads and earn me a decent income from my website. So being frustrated at this lengthy procedure, I embarked on searching Google for possible quick fix methods which would start traffic flooding to my website and greatly increase the potential of visitors clicking on my Google Ads.

The method I fell upon was the TRAFFIC EXCHANGES, which guarantee visitors to your site in exchange for you visiting other people sites. Some of these TRAFFIC EXCHANGES operate with Google Ad clicking in mind, promising no guarantee that people would click on your Ads, but you will see an increase in Google Ad clicking.

Being stupid and impatient and at the time not realising I was doing anything really wrong I joined ten of these TRAFFIC EXCHANGES and built up my traffic credits every day for a month and sure enough I got thousands of visitors and quite a few clicks on my Google Ads, it wasn’t thousands of dollars but it was enough to put a smile on my face.

Then like a bolt of lightening from the heavens, a nice little email came from Google expressing they had been detecting invalid page impressions from TRAFFIC EXCHANGES and if this was to continue they may have to ban my account.

Now I tell you I immediately went to all them TRAFFIC EXCHANGE accounts and promptly deleted my urls to my Google Ad site and ceased the use of these traffic programs straight away. Sure the traffic to my site dropped to under ten a day, but I felt very lucky and relieved that Google had not banned me permanently from the Google Adsense program.

The trouble with the terms and conditions at Google Adsense, is it does not clearly state what is illegal page impressions and it wasn’t till I received this email that I realised I was doing anything wrong, and im pretty sure that many webmasters out there have had the same conclusion and have not been as lucky as me and have had their Google Adsense accounts permanently closed.

This articles main purpose is drive a point home, if you’re wanting to make an income from Google Adsense, then the slow methodical approach of adding keyword rich web pages and writing and submitting articles over many months will eventually start giving you that much needed traffic and hopefully reward your hard work with enough Google Ad clicks to give you that dream income. DON’T CHEAT!!

The Warning signs of Online Fraud and How to avoid it

Filed under: Net Commerce — admin @ 4:00 pm

The number may seem grim for Web-based commerce. In 2004 in the Unites States alone, computer users logged in more than 207,000 Internet fraud reports to the U.S. Internet Crime Complaint Center. If you look hard at this number, you may be astounded, and a good bit frightened, by the implication. You may ask, “Is it really safe to buy and sell at an online site?”

Put simply, the answer is: yes. The Internet is an incredibly powerful tool for business, so you can’t pass it over just because of a few crooks and conmeneven if they do seem like they’re behind every pop-up window and banner ad. The truth is that you can create opportunity and make more money online than you could lose in fraud.

Better yet, you could lose absolutely nothing if you know the warning signs of fraud and the tricks to avoid danger during your Web-based business dealings.

Whether you’re looking to buy or sell goods online, the firstand the bestway to fight fraud is prevention. There are certain warning signs to watch for, which should set off a chorus of alarms and flashing red lights in your head. Don’t do business with this person! For buyers, these potential warning signs can be when a seller:

• asks you to pay through non-traceable avenues, such as Western Union or MoneyGram, or a third party, or via an overseas address. You should ask yourselfand the sellerwhy he or she won’t accept payment options that are traceable and convenient for you.

• posts an image on his auction or classified ad that’s obviously from an outside source. Sometimes these images may not even match the type of item, let alone the brand, that the ad features.

• sells a typically expensive item at cut-rate prices, which is a good indicator that it could be counterfeit.

• refuses to provide tracking numbers when you purchase an item. Tracking numbers are another way to trace a valid transaction.

• offers only excuses, instead of help, when your purchased item doesn’t arrive at your doorstep.

If you’re a seller, you ought to be wary of signs of a suspicious buyer, such as when a buyer:

• asks to pay only some of the fee, offering to the pay the rest sometime in the future. This is the old excuse from Popeye’s friend Wimpy, who always could be heard saying, “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.” Wimpy never paid Tuesday.

• sends you a cashier’s check for more money than the agreed price “by mistake.” In this scam, the buyer then asks you to repay him the difference by personal check, wire transfer, or money orderbefore you find out that the cashier’s check didn’t clear. Believe it or not, this scheme works because cashier’s checks can be cashed before they bounce.

• sends you a cashier’s check for the correct amount of money but then demands a refund, requesting that you repay with your own money. See the scheme above for how this trick works.

These warning signs, of course, are only for a handful of the frauds and scams out there. Conmen are good at what they do, trying to separate you from your money. That’s why it’s best to always follow these golden rules of online commerce whenever buying or selling on an Internet auction or classified site.

Keep your common sense. No matter how good a deal seems, or how much clients say they want to pay, always remember the old adage: “If it sounds too good to be true….”

Do your business locally. Try to buy and sell from your neighbors as much as possible. It’s safer, more convenient, and better for your local economy. What’s more, it saves you the trouble of dealing with foreign vendors and buyers. Though they may be legit, dealing with them can be complicated because of different legal systems and customs, which can make any conflict difficult.

Seal the deal with plastic. Paying for items with credit cards, and allowing your customers to charge for purchases, is a great all-around business decision. Under U.S. law, all plastic purchases are protected from fraud and allowed to be disputed in case of problems.

Meet at the middle man. Intermediary services are virtual middle men that protect both buyers and sellers from cyber shysters. Services like Escrow act as a holding pen for both payment and sale items until both the buyer and seller are content. Only then will Escrow finish a transaction.

Purchase with PayPal. As Escrow and credit cards do, PayPal guards against fraud for both buyers and sellers. It’s a secure and reliable way to transfer money over the Internet. No wonder PayPal is the most popular online money transfer service.

As you can see, the odds are actually in your favor when it comes to doing business on online classified or auction sites. The resource of the internet is far too valuable than to be taken away by a few crooks and conmen. It simply comes down to being smart, sensible, and observant whenever buying or selling on the Web. Then again, that’s what all good business is about, whether you’re doing it in a mall or on the information superhighway.

Growing up in Belfast in the 70s and 80s

Filed under: Net Commerce — admin @ 3:56 pm

My childhood was very different to many of yours. I grew up in
west Belfast, where the sound of bombs and gunshots was a normal
everyday experience. With people being killed daily and British
soldiers patrolling our streets; life on the streets just wasn’t
the same as we experience it today.

The weekend activities for youths in those days were very
different to that that I know today. Instead of thinking about
going out to socialise or play games the majority of local
youths would go out to riot; with either people from the other
side of the political of the other side, or with the British
soldiers and/or RUC (royal Ulster constabulary).

During the 1970s and 80s Belfast was like a war-zone, and
Belfast’s troubled history has seen many tragedies and
atrocities. These atrocities are illustrated in the many murals
dotted all over Belfast, painted on the sides of houses.

These massive paintings are today a major Belfast attraction for
tourists. In the past, however, they were a way for the
residents of Belfast’s troubled areas to get their points
across, or make a plea or demand that the rest of world could
see through the power of the media. Now these paintings have
been brought to the internet. A new site (
http://www.gransha-taxi.co.uk ) has uploaded photos of these
paintings for us all to see.

You can see murals from both sides of the political divide. Some
of the murals are commemorations of something that has happened
in the past, or a memorial of people that have been killed.

There are 4 main sections of murals on the sites: murals from 4
of the hardest hit areas of Belfast - 3 nationalist areas: The
Falls Road - the Republican backbone of west Belfast;
Ballymurphy/Whiterock - west Belfast’s Republican heart; and
Ardoyne - the Republican stronghold of north Belfast, and 1
unionist area: The Shankill - the loyalist stronghold in west
Belfast.

The main page of the Belfast murals section of this site (
http://www.gransha-taxi.co.uk/Belfast_murals.htm ) also show
pictures of the famous Belfast peace wall. This wall is over 20
feet high, and stretches for miles, separating unionists and
nationalists in west Belfast.

This is the situation that I grew up in - if you’re interested
in Irish history or the troubles of the north of Ireland then
these pictures are a must see.

Affiliate Marketing

Filed under: Net Commerce — admin @ 6:01 am

What is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate program is nothing but you hearten other webmasters to sign up and advertise your services and products on their sites, in exchange you pay them based on their performance. An affiliate program is an excellent way to gain additional sales. There are options for all budgets, but you generally get what you pay for.

There are various way that affiliates are paid:

1. Per Impression: The affiliate is paid a set amount for every time that your ad is shown. The downside is that affiliates have no incentive to send you traffic, or to put your ad in a attention-grabbing location.

2. Per Click: You pay a set amount for each unique person that clicks on your ad. This is similar to a PPC engine. The downside is that you must pay even if the traffic is of a low quality.

3. Per Lead: You pay your affiliates based on the number of unique people that click on your ad, and then proceed to complete a particular action (for example, a “lead” might be when someone downloads a trial, or signs up for a mailing list). This is very similar to Per Sale, but is more common on sites promoting free services .

4. Per Sale: The affiliates are remunerated either a percentage or a set amount for each sale generated by a user that originated from the affiliate’s site(for example I came across a template selling site named templatemuseum.com which offers a high rate of Per sale commission).

Affiliates generally prefer receiving commissions on a Per Impression or Per Click basis, but site owners have a preference of the inevitability of Per Lead and Per Sale.

There are three ways to start an affiliate program: Your own script, install a script, or use a third-party service.

Your Own script

If your website’s order system has been custom-made, then one option may be to ask your programmer to add an affiliate program to the system. The programmer would add some code to the payment script, and then develop a simple interface for affiliates to see how they’re doing, and for you to check on your affiliates.

This is an cost-effective choice for sites based on custom scripting, but site owners may be somnolent to trust your reporting (after all, it would be in your best interest to fudge the numbers). Established sites can get away with this, but new websites may have difficulty here. Also, if you roll your own then it will be entirely up to you to promote it.

Installing a Script

If you don’t have a custom-made order script, or if the required modifications would be too pricey, then a similar alternative would be to install a ready-made script. The CGI Resource Index has a list of such scripts. Free scripts are out there, but are generally difficult to find if you’re interested in the script’s quality (which is important for an affiliate program). Expect to pay $20 to $60 for a good affiliate script.
Like rolling your own, this presents the problem of finding affiliates. Also, affiliates may be just as apprehensive of using a script controlled by you as they would be of a custom-built affiliate system.

Using a Third-Party Service

The final alternative, and the one chosen by the largest number of sites, is to use a third-party service. Here, you let another company control your affiliate program. They will take care of managing it, and to some extent finding affiliates, but at a price. For example templatemuseum.com can be viewed as a destination place for retrival of information regarding the best affiliate program in the market today.
